FIELD NOTE / 001

THE SYSTEM
IS ALREADY
CONNECTED.

Nature. Infrastructure. Data. Energy. People. Artificial intelligence.

Technology is no longer separate from the environment around us. It is embedded in the systems we live inside.

LAYER / NATURE

THE PHYSICAL WORLD IS PART OF THE SYSTEM.

Technology does not operate in isolation. The systems around us depend on physical resources, infrastructure and relationships that begin outside the screen.

DON'T JUST
READ THE SYSTEM.

Explore it. Test it. Break down how cybersecurity, AI and human decisions move through the same connected environment.

TECHNOLOGY HAS
A PHYSICAL
FOOTPRINT.

A message can feel weightless. A model can feel intangible. But every digital service is backed by physical infrastructure.

Data travels through networks. Models run on hardware. Hardware sits inside data centres. Data centres need electricity, cooling and land. Devices require minerals, manufacturing and logistics.

That does not make technology inherently harmful. It means technology is material—and decisions about how we design, deploy and secure it have consequences beyond a screen.

“The interesting question is not whether technology has an impact. It is how intelligently we choose that impact.”

SECURITY
01

Everything begins with an environment.

01 / NATURE

Start with the world around the machine.

Digital systems rely on physical inputs: land, minerals, energy, water and the human systems that maintain them.

02 / ENERGY

Every computation is backed by power.

Energy becomes infrastructure: generation, transmission, backup, cooling and the systems that keep services available.

03 / COMPUTE

Models turn hardware into capability.

Training and inference happen on processors. Capacity, efficiency and scale shape the trade-offs.

04 / DATA

Data becomes both asset and exposure.

Storage and movement create value—and attack surfaces. Security is part of the system, not a layer added later.

05 / SECURITY

Resilience is an ecological property too.

Healthy systems absorb disturbance, recover and adapt. The same principles matter in cybersecurity.

FIELD GUIDEFIVE SIGNALS
01

PHISHING

Look for urgency, unusual requests, mismatched domains and links that do not match the destination.

02

IDENTITY

Use multi-factor authentication wherever it matters. A strong password is not the whole identity story.

03

AI OUTPUT

Fluent output is not proof. Verify important claims, sources, calculations and assumptions.

04

DEVICES

Updates, backups and sensible permissions turn everyday hardware into a more resilient endpoint.

05

SHARING

Before sharing sensitive information, ask what it reveals, who receives it and what remains after deletion.
